GIVING Leadership with Empathy

Empathy is the ability to understand and actually feel what other people are feeling.  It means to put yourself in their shoes and feeling what it must be like to be experiencing what they are experiencing.

If we are going to be a community of people who set out each day to be of service to others – our friends, classmates, coworkers, teammates, and our family members – we have to first understand how others feel before we can help them.

Leadership is all about serving other people.

When we put ourselves in someone else’s shoes, we not only gain a deeper understanding of what they’re feeling, but we also open ourselves up to feeling those feelings.

“Learning to stand in somebody else’s shoes, to see through their eyes, that’s how peace begins.  And it’s up to you to make that happen.

Empathy is a quality of character than can change the world.”

~ President Barrack Obama, 44th President of the United States

Empathy is what helps us GIVE Leadership with our thoughts, words, and actions.

That alone helps us become more purposeful in our conversations which allows us to lead, coach, and inspire others in any situation.

It all starts with a focus on them, as opposed to focusing on ourselves.

“Great leadership isn’t about being in charge.

It’s about taking care of those in your charge.”

~ Simon Sinek, author
