Vulnerability is a Gateway to Kindness

Being vulnerable is when we open up to others about what makes us nervous, frustrated, sad, or maybe even what we’d like to improve about ourselves.

Vulnerability is being able to accept that it’s okay to not be okay.  It’s admitting that you have some things you’re working on or that you want to work on.

It shows your humanness.  And that helps you relate to other people.  You may discover that when you’re able to let yourself be vulnerable and share with others what gets you down or how you’d like to improve, they may have those same feelings.

You’re a human being.  I’m a human being.  All your friends and family members are human beings.  Everywhere you go in life, and everyone you’ll ever meet is a human being.

Many adults view vulnerability as a weakness, but it can be one of our superpowers when it comes to our ability to connect with and ultimately lead and inspire others as we grow in our lives and careers.

-Ask for Help, It’s Okay:  If you need help in some way, ask for it.

-Share How You Feel, It’s Okay:  Be willing to let others in and share with them how you feel in certain situations.

-Share Your Thoughts and Opinions, It’s Okay:  Express your own thoughts and feelings, as long as you stay respectful.  Conversation makes for good company and builds relationships.

-Slow Down and Enjoy the Ride, It’s Okay:  We only get one life, so what a shame it would be if we spent all of our time feeling stressed, nervous, sad, or worried.  Learning to slow down, be present, and enjoy the little moments will help you enjoy a happier and healthier life.

-(As I write this, in the spirit of vulnerability, know that this one is definitely something I continue to work on for myself in my own life.  I don’t do “slow down”, nor “enjoy the ride” well during stressful times.  So, we’re all in this together…)

We’d love to hear your stories of how your friends, coworkers, students, or family members have shown you hospitality; or how you’ve taken it up on yourself to Give Kindness to others.
