Different Matters
Different Matters
The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas means different things to different people.
For some it means a great party. For others it means an amazing steak but not before a remarkable craft cocktail experience. For many it means an electric vibe on the casino floor. To some guests it means an unrivaled, one-of-a-kind wrap around terrace suite with a view of the fountains.
To those of us who worked there leading up to and for years following its grand opening on December 15th, 2010, it means a little MORE.
M.O.R.E. stood for Magic – Original – Relevant – Engaging for our opening team of CoStars; the predominant“star” being The Cosmopolitan herself.
Everyone from our CEO on through the organization kept saying, “We don’t want to be bigger. We don’t want to be better. We just want to be different.”
Magic
When people feel like they can be themselves, accepted for who they are as opposed to what they’ve accomplished, they begin making magic happen. The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas was and still is all about individuality, trusting CoStars at every level to perform unscripted magic, as long as it results in a positive experience for the Guest and CoStar community.
That’s different.
Original
When the expectation is to “be bold and try something new” as opposed to playing it safe with uninspired action, people operate with a newfound sense of purpose. The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas set out to innovate, changing the game in LasVegas and throughout the hospitality industry. The team there continues to do just that, one Guest, one conversation at a time.
That’s different.
Relevant
When personable people are encouraged to personally connect, whether on the front drive, at the front desk, at the Identity Membership booth, at a craps table, or in a restaurant, the game certainly changes. Ordinary transactions become extraordinary conversations, creating relationships along the way.
That’s different.
Engaging
When mundane and boring annual performance appraisals are referred to as Conversations Make Good Company, they’re no longer mundane nor boring. It’s less about numbers and stock price and more about the connections with the people who deliver the results. At The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, we had a mantra, “We create community every chance we get.” Regardless of rank, role, or title, if and when you crossed paths with a fellow CoStar, engagement happened organically. It was unlike any place I’d ever worked.
That’s different.
The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas may mean something to you, and I hope it does. For several of us, it’s not only the place that gave us a job, it’s the culture which taught us how to transform those jobs into meaningful work.
The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas is different, and it matters.
December 15th, 2010 we opened the doors for the first time.
Happy Anniversary to all past and current CoStars.
Keep being you. Be different. It matters.

One for the road…
T’was the night before opening, and WE REALIZED HOW NOT READY WE WERE! Tom Bastek (left) and Mike Moshenko (right) stuck around until the literal eleventh hour, making sure we were ready to open without a hitch the following morning. Tom stayed late printing Identity Membership cards proactively for our VIP arrivals. Mike drove his own pickup truck to our printing vendor, and he and I picked up, loaded, unloaded, and stocked all The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas marketing material throughout the resort.
We all went home, took a nap, and raced back in to officially change the game in Las Vegas.
