ENGAGE
Being engaged means:
- Involved in activity with others.
- To be interested in others.
- Committed to others.
Questions then, for all of us are “How can we engage?” and “Why does engagement even matter?”
The answers are simple on the surface but make a significant and lasting impact on the people with whom we engage.
Consider the impact the following experiences have had on you in the past, or even right now:
- Conversations with one another.
- Play sports with one another.
- Participate in hobbies or activities with one another.
- Learn with one another.
This leads to a sense of togetherness and community.
Why are we better together, with strong relationships with each other?
Community – When we build strong relationships, friendships, and partnerships with one another by engaging in meaningful conversations, we experience life differently than if we try to do life on our own.
Diverse perspectives – We learn from other people, which broadens our perspective and opens our minds to what else may be possible for our own lives and especially how we can engage even more with others.
Respect and appreciation – We learn to respect and appreciate others for who they are as opposed to judging by what we see on the outside.
We’re more alike than different – We often learn that we’re really not that different at all, deep down.
We’re all human beings. Despite many differences, this one, simple area of common ground is consistent among every single one of us – we’re all human beings.
Science tells us that all of us – all human beings – are hard-wired for social connection with one another.
It turns, out, that human interactions and social connection aren’t just a good idea for more diversity in thought, more creative ideas, and a great way to learn new things; in fact, connection, a sense of community with one another, is a human need.
We need connection and engagement with one another to stay motivated in our lives and in our work, and for our mental and even physical health.
So, this is why engaging with other people – our friends, family, teachers, students, coaches, and coworkers – is yet another way to GiVE Compassion to the people we love and appreciate the most.
Your GiVE Culture Challenge for this week:
Identify one friend or coworker with whom you’ll commit to engaging on a more personal level.
Intentionally seek to understand and learn at least one new thing about them; and enjoy the magic of engagement, as you find even more commonalities with them.
Give yourself a due date of one week from today to intentionally engage with them.
We’d love to hear your stories of how your friends, coworkers, students, or family members have shown you compassion; or how you’ve taken it up on yourself to show compassion to others.
Share your stories with us in the Lead with Hospitality Facebook group here.
Have a great day, and never stop GiVING the best of yourself and looking for the best in others.
