GiVING Kindness by Living Your Personal Values

Value is how much something is worth, or how important something is.

Do you have value?  Think about what you do well.  What are your strengths?  What do you believe in, and beyond that, what do you stand for?

This is yet another way each of us can GiVE Kindness to others in order to form and grow thriving relationships and positive cultures wherever we go – school, home, work, and into the future.

Remember that GiVING Kindness is about helping people when they need it.  When they’re sad, we can lift them up.  When they’re hurt, we can help them feel better.  When they’re nervous or scared, we can help them and encourage them.

Sometimes the easiest way to help other people is to simply understand our own value and what makes us unique and special.

Once we understand our own personal value, we can pour ourselves into other people to lift them up; and perhaps even help them understand their own strengths and personal value.

Personal Values

Personal values are our fundamental beliefs that guide our behavior.  Our values guide us in how we live our lives and how we treat other people (and even ourselves).  Personal values motivate every decision we make and action we take.

For example, our personal values – how we really want to behave – determine how we think about certain things, what we say in certain situations, and ultimately what we do in certain situations.

The Importance of Personal Values

Understanding our values is the first step to becoming the type of person we want to become.  And who we are and how we act will also make an impact on everyone around us.

We have a choice in every situation – we can either be a happy, positive influence on our friends, teachers, and family; or we can be a negative influence on our friends, teachers, coworkers, bosses, customers, clients, and yes, even our own family.

Which do you want to be?

Your GiVE Culture Challenge for this week:

  1. Make a list of ten words that best describe your own beliefs and attitudes about what’s important in life.
  1. From your list of ten words, then choose the four words that best describe your own beliefs and attitudes about life.  The choice will be difficult, as you truly value all the words, but this is about picking the values that are really the most important to you and what type of person you want to become.
  1. Live your values:  Stay true to your personal values in how you live your life – let them guide your every thought, word spoken, and action.  That’s why it’s important to spend this time, discovering your own personal values.  When you know and understand who you want to be, you have a built-in guiding light which inspires how you think, speak, and act in every situation in life.

Once you understand both your value and your values, you can use them to help other people and yourself.  You can GiVE Kindness and make a positive impact on your friends, teammates, classmates, and family members at home.

We’d love to hear your stories of how your friends, coworkers, students, or family members have shown you kindness; or how you’ve taken it up on yourself to show kindness to others.

Share it in the Lead with Hospitality Facebook group here.

Have a great day, and never stop GiVING the best of yourself and looking for the best in others.
